OUR LEARNING
Building strong foundations through meaningful experiences, inquiry and discovery.
Learning Approach
At Terra Moyo, we believe children learn best when they feel safe, curious and actively involved in their learning. Just as a tree needs strong roots before it can grow tall and reach towards the sky, children need strong foundations before they can confidently build more complex knowledge and skills. We place great importance on developing deep understanding in literacy, numeracy, communication, independence and executive functioning. Rather than rushing children towards abstract concepts, we help them build confidence through meaningful experiences, hands-on exploration and opportunities to learn at a pace that feels secure, connected and lasting.
Inspired by Montessori and Reggio Emilia principles, our learning environments are carefully prepared to encourage independence, creativity, inquiry and collaboration. Learning is organised around meaningful themes that help children make sense of themselves, their relationships, their environment and the wider world. Through project work, discussion, investigation and real-world experiences, children are encouraged to ask questions, make connections and take ownership of their learning. Alongside academic development, we place strong emphasis on wellbeing, resilience and social-emotional growth, helping children become confident, compassionate and capable young people who feel connected to themselves, their community and the world around them.
"Our children come home full of stories, questions and discoveries. One week they are teaching us about planets and constellations, the next they are turning recycled materials into creative projects or sharing something they observed in the forest. Their excitement is contagious and reflects a school where learning feels meaningful, joyful and connected to the real world."

Curriculum
At Terra Moyo, learning is carefully planned to support children's development while still allowing space for curiosity, creativity and individual growth. Our spiral curriculum combines strong academic foundations with meaningful experiences that help children make sense of themselves, their relationships, their environment and the wider world. The learning is organised around carefully chosen themes that are revisited over time in increasingly deeper and more age-appropriate ways. Through these themes, children develop literacy, numeracy, communication, scientific thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills in meaningful and connected contexts.
While uniquely Terra Moyo, our curriculum is carefully aligned with internationally recognised learning objectives and developmental milestones. Children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding expected within international school settings while learning through inquiry, exploration, collaboration and real-world experiences. We believe strong academic learning grows from strong foundations, and place particular importance on literacy, numeracy, communication, independence and executive functioning.
Following Montessori principles, children move from concrete experiences towards increasingly abstract thinking. Concepts are first explored through hands-on materials, meaningful experiences and real-world application before progressing towards deeper understanding. Alongside academic learning, children regularly engage in art, gardening, outdoor learning, mindfulness, yoga and collaborative projects. These experiences enrich children's understanding of the world, support wellbeing and creativity, and help develop the confidence, responsibility and adaptability needed for future learning and life.
Our goal is not simply to teach children what to think, but to help them become confident learners who know how to think, question and discover.
Forest School
We believe some of the most meaningful learning happens beyond four walls.
Weekly visits to Karura Forest allow children to explore, investigate, create and develop a lifelong connection with the natural world.

Digital & Global Citizenship
How do we prepare children for a rapidly changing world shaped by technology and AI?
We believe the answer begins with strong foundations. Before children can become responsible digital citizens, they first need curiosity, communication skills, creativity, critical thinking and real-world experiences. For this reason, Nursery and Kindergarten remain low-tech and screen-free environments where children learn through movement, conversation, outdoor exploration and hands-on discovery.
Digital literacy is introduced gradually through both unplugged and experiential learning. Through games, discussions, projects and hands-on activities, children explore concepts such as online safety, communication, problem solving, critical thinking and responsible technology use without relying heavily on screens.
Technology is approached as a tool rather than a destination. In Primary, children are introduced to computers in a limited and purposeful way, primarily to support their personal projects and present their learning. We believe that in a world increasingly shaped by technology and artificial intelligence, children need more than technical knowledge alone. They need curiosity, creativity, adaptability, empathy and the ability to think independently and responsibly. Our aim is to help children develop a healthy and balanced relationship with technology while staying deeply connected to people, nature and the real world around them.
